Chapter Thirty-Four

We left for our fifteen night, eight-state tour of Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona the next day. Dave moved into Max O’Neal’s home to provide his sister with adult supervision. Annabelle was overjoyed not to be sent back to boarding school.

Wearing dark slacks and a loose top, I’ve ditched my tight, matronly bun for a ponytail. My black horn-rimmed glasses work like armor, and while my silicone middle has been downsized, I’m still chubby. My unattractive persona is liberating. Or maybe it’s simply easier to be myself when I’m being someone else.

I’m successfully working as a tour operator, a much harder gig than I expected. I look professional, but I’m no threat to anyone in the beauty department. As a child actress and a model, I’ve had my share of performance anxiety. I’ve also talked to popular public speakers who stress out every time they go on stage.

Nerves are the biggest obstacle. In the beginning of the tour they were relentless. I was stuck feeling sick with acute nausea. A metallic, watery taste formed under my wooden tongue. My stomach roiled. Sweat broke out down my back. My appetite disappeared.

The “clients” (also called “customers”) on our bus expect perfection. An average age of twenty-five years old, I swear they smell fear like sharks with blood in the water. Fifty-four names to learn, fifty-four foreign travelers, personalities to negotiate, to lead, to guide from city to city on a 45-foot motor coach.

As an extra seat was available on the bus, the boss brought Sky along as a gofer as well as a tour operator trainee. Talk about being a hard worker and liked by everyone. The girl is beyond excited. Sky’s motto is: “No shit stinks so bad I can’t handle it.”

Max phoned “the other woman” A.K.A. Stretch (meaning me), leaving a voice message that he was unavoidably away on tour for two weeks. Apologizing for his absence, he said he would continue to text while he was away. Mute as his sub, he knows I won’t be talking to him on the phone.

No problem. Guess I’ll have to bathe by myself, I replied, sending him a photo of my thigh, knee and foot arching out of a bathtub full of bubbles. I’d dragged the picture down from my cloud, a left over from a commercial I once modeled for. I’m looking forward to his reply.

I’m so glad Max is here as back up. Not sure if I’d want to do this gig without his support. We are the clients’ only chaperones, along with Sky, of course. I wouldn’t even be here if not for him!

My ex-fiancé flies into my thoughts like a bad dream. I thought I loved him, yet compared to what I feel for my boss, Stefan was nothing to me. With Max it’s not just attraction, it’s goofy off the scale adoration. It’s stomach butterflies, exhilaration, and an overwhelming desire to make him happy.
